Medical Cannabis and Migraine in Thailand

Migraine is more than an ordinary headache. Attacks may involve throbbing pain, nausea, sensitivity to light or sound, and visual or sensory symptoms. Frequent or severe attacks can disrupt work, travel, sleep, and daily life.

Early studies have explored whether medical cannabis may reduce certain migraine symptoms or attack frequency. The findings are promising in some groups, but the evidence remains limited and better clinical trials are still needed. Medical cannabis is not an established universal treatment for migraine and should not replace an individual diagnosis or standard migraine care.

Understanding your headache pattern

Not Every Severe Headache Is Migraine

A consultation should establish whether the symptoms are consistent with migraine or whether another cause needs investigation. Useful information includes:

- when the headaches began and how often they occur;

- where the pain is located and how long it lasts;

- nausea, vomiting, light or sound sensitivity, or aura;

- menstrual, sleep, food, stress, or medication-related triggers;

- medicines already used and how often they are taken; and

- new symptoms or changes in the usual headache pattern.

Keeping a headache diary can help identify patterns and show whether a treatment is improving attack frequency, severity, or daily function.

Know the emergency warning signs

Some Headaches Need Immediate Medical Care

Do not wait for an online cannabis consultation if the headache:

- starts suddenly and is extremely severe;

- is the first severe headache of your life or feels like the “worst ever”;

- occurs with weakness, numbness, facial drooping, difficulty speaking, confusion, fainting, seizure, loss of balance, or loss of vision;

- occurs with high fever, a stiff neck, or a new rash;

- follows a head injury; or

- is rapidly worsening or very different from your normal pattern.

Safety and suitability

What the Practitioner Needs to Know

Share your full medication list, including migraine medicines, antidepressants, anti-seizure medicines, blood-pressure medicines, anticoagulants, sleep aids, supplements, and any cannabis or CBD products already used.

Also discuss pregnancy or breastfeeding, heart or vascular disease, liver conditions, mental health history, substance-dependence risk, and any work or driving responsibilities. Cannabis may cause dizziness, drowsiness, impaired attention, mood or perception changes, and medicine interactions. It should not be combined casually with alcohol or other sedating substances.

What to expect from THAIKANYA

Consultation Before Any Prescription Decision

The practitioner will review the headache history, warning signs, current treatment, medical conditions, and treatment goals. You may be advised to continue established migraine care, adjust another part of the treatment plan, or seek further investigation.

If medical cannabis is considered clinically appropriate, the practitioner will explain the potential benefits, uncertainties, precautions, and follow-up plan. Where cannabis flower is prescribed, an authorised practitioner must issue the required PT.33 documentation under current Thai rules. A consultation does not guarantee treatment or a prescription.
